It’s Somer Saturday. Are you ready for a reboot?!?

I’m spending the week with family at Snowbird Ski Resort (AWESOME in the summertime!) and my brother Abe and I are doing the

    Green Smoothie Challenge

Wanna join us? We’ll also be running at altitude while trading off with a jogging stroller, swimming and doing tons of hiking.

Abe is starting his final year of his Master’s Program in Printmaking. You can connect with him and see more of his work on Facebook.

Abe was hugely instrumental in my plant based journey. He was the one who first convinced me to watch Forks Over Knives. He is one of the most brilliant and compassionate people I know. He spends his summers working at the world renowned Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah in their “Wild Friends” program.

Here are some prints he commissioned for Best Friends.

    Black Head

    Western Screech Owl

    Northern Sawitts

Here we are dressed as twin Nacho Libres for the Halloween Half Marathon last year. Sorry about the eyes closed Abe, it’s the only photo I’ve got ;)

I’ll check in on Tasty Tuesday to let you know how we’re rockin it. We may even have a guest post or Green Smoothie Challenge approved recipes for you from Abe the Babe. Send him special vibes in the comments below as he will be doing this week alcohol free and will need all the support he can get (no alcohol allowed on the challenge). Hopefully I won’t find him twitching on the bathroom floor….

Peaches and/or mango with spinach tickles me green. :p

It’s a standard around here! YUM!

    2. August 11, 2012 at 12:27 am

Yeah Abe. You can do it! :)

      • August 11, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Started. Woot Woot! Abe and DTM are out running. I’ve got a cold :/

The blonde and I were going to to a juice cleanse. . . Maybe a green smoothie challenge instead. Hmmmm….

Totally separate, Somer, what shoudl I blog about, hope, baseball, or why I went veg to being with? I asked Twitter, but you don’t tweet, so. . . Thanks!

      • August 11, 2012 at 4:34 am

Um, I think about why you went veg sounds awesome, but whatever you want would be awesome!

Yes, join us. The green smoothie challenge is much more doable and SUPER powerful!

        • August 14, 2012 at 7:26 am

Alright, so I’m not full-on green smoothie-ing with you, but instead we’re doing a whole-juice cleanse. Lots of kale, lots of spinach, and lots of fruit in the juice. No dinner. I’ll let you know how we do. . .

          • August 21, 2012 at 10:06 am

Well, how did yours go!?! :)

      Abe!
Yay. Yes, that’s my cheer for you both. Good luck this week. We’ll try not to party crash, even though you’re just up the road. The halloween half looks awesome and I’m a bit jealous of your costumes. They’re pretty radical.

      • August 11, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Um, there might be a spare room at the end of the week…..

I ran that half with the flu. Abe stayed with me for seven miles. Then I made him go on without me. I would have dropped out if there was a medical tent. I walked the rest of the way and it took me over 3 hours to finish. I guess I don’t like paying a buttload of cash for a race then not running it!

Enjoy your week in the mountains – the hiking sounds great – hope you find some flat spots for the running. Unless you enjoy running uphill, in which case, you go girl! And Abe, too.

      • August 11, 2012 at 2:40 pm

        Thanks!

I HATE running uphill, but I torture myself with it anyway because it makes me stronger overall. We’ll have to stick to paved roads and cleared trails with the jogging stroller, but there are some hikes that the kids can handle. If not, we’ll carry them!

Abe is running a marathon in 3 weeks!

        • August 11, 2012 at 2:52 pm

Good for Abe that training is hard work (I say from my couch). I won’t be running any races myself, but our best friends run marathons, triathlons, and one of them has even run two ironmans. I’m awfully proud of them.

As you would be! I imagine all your gardening, hanging laundry and acreage keeps you fairly active! Not everyone can or needs to run marathons! ;)

    6. August 11, 2012 at 2:58 pm

Those costumes rock! And the only good thing about running uphill is that you get to go downhill at some point…! :)

      • August 21, 2012 at 9:54 am

Ah yes, downhill races are my ABSOLUTE favorite!

    7. August 11, 2012 at 10:25 pm

haha yeah, twitching is never a good thing:) Way to go Abe! You can do it!! :) I hope you guys have a wonderful time!! The mountains in the summer are so beautiful and just bursting with life! And i love the Nacho Libre costumes — they’re awesome! Happy Green Smoothie-ing! :) Hugs, Caralyn

      • August 21, 2012 at 9:55 am

Thanks Caralyn! We had such an amazing time! I love that you know how beautiful the scenery can be here. I’m equally lucky to have been to many of the lakes in Wisconsin! Some of the best memories ever I have are of sailing near Madeline Island!

    8. August 11, 2012 at 11:32 pm

I would have never put spinach in the blender…but i am inspired to try it, you haven’t let me down thus far. Cool nacho Libre costumes…now i feel like nachos…. maybe the health kick can start tomorrow….

      • August 21, 2012 at 10:00 am

Oh, yes, you need to put spinach in the blender with your fruits! Use just a little at first, then increase over time as you adjust to the taste. My kids beg me for green smoothies. If you use a little stevia it’s divine!

    9. August 12, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Abe is gonna power through this, no problem! How could he not w/ the combination of awesome green smoothies, you and beautiful, inspiring scenery?? I love his prints! I have a BFA in painting and printmaking and I really miss the printmaking part. I’m a rank amateur compared to what Abe is doing. Beautiful.

      • August 21, 2012 at 10:02 am

I’ll bet your work is anything but amateur, but Abe loved your comments!

We had so much fun Annie! I’m all ready dreaming about next year.

    10. August 12, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Oh wow. I’m thinking about trying this green smoothie challenge. My birthday’s coming up and I have got my sights set on a vitamix!

      • August 14, 2012 at 7:27 am

We got ours just this summer, and I love it. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is making soup in it, but that’s coming.

        • August 21, 2012 at 10:06 am

Soup in the power blenders rules. I still can’t believe these machines can heat up stuff!

          • August 25, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Scary, especially since the Vitamix just sits on the gear. It doesn’t lock in or anything. Makes me uber-paranoid about unplugging it.

            • September 3, 2012 at 2:10 am

It is a bit frightening, isn’t it!?

      • August 21, 2012 at 10:03 am

Oh! I hope you get it! And happy birthday coming up!!!

We both feel a lot lighter and really rejuvenated. I’m going to make it a quarterly cleanse. So much easier than a juice fast!

        • August 25, 2012 at 12:13 pm

I’m on day six….. I’m liking it, but I am craving a black bean burger harddddd

          • September 3, 2012 at 2:06 am

Oh wow, I missed this comment. Yes, those cravings become insatiable near the end!!! Great job girl!

    11. August 12, 2012 at 11:58 pm

Have a beautiful week! Sunshine, family, smoothies, art and compassion – what’s not to love. :-)

      • August 21, 2012 at 10:04 am

        Ditto!

It was so much fun! Thanks Sparkles!

    12. August 13, 2012 at 2:34 pm

That sounds like a fantastic week! I can’t wait to heart about how Abe does! :-)

      • August 21, 2012 at 10:05 am

Thanks Kristy, we both enjoyed it so much, it was hard to come home to “reality” Abe did amazing! So proud of him!

    13. August 13, 2012 at 8:41 pm

I can’t wait for the update!
